As part of the work I’m doing to update this website I’ve decided to move my photo galleries offsite to Flickr.com to make it easier for people to navigate the photos. Hey! It’s a new podcast, the first in a long time… download it now!! This summer will mark my third year away from the film business and even though I visit enough film sets around town to satisfy my craving for the scent of diesel, I realized around the end of 2006 that I’ve been missing a different sort of smell…. the honeywagon; rolling porta-potty of the film industry. Mobile shithouse to the Stars. The trailer that launched a million poops from a thousand wannabe Brandos. So I started in to write it all down in an article for the website but as I’ve been so all-fired busy lately it was much simpler to toss a recorder in the car and start talking off the top of my head. Please forgive the recording quality (I threw the accent in for free).

Have you ever been watching a car chase movie and thought to yourself “Gee, there sure are a lot of skidmarks on the road…” just as one of the onscreen vehicles slams on its brakes and goes into a mad spin? I personally never gave car chase continuity a thought until after I’d worked on a wreck of a movie named “Black Dog“, back in 1997.

Most mornings, on my way into Atlanta, I hop off the Downtown Connector and drive northward on surface streets, enjoying the ever-changing views of town. Quite often I drive past locations from old movie projects and am reminded of those past events in vivid detail. Most recently I’ve been pondering the day we shot in front of the historic Ponce De Leon Apartments at the corner of Ponce and Peachtree. We were there for the pilot episode of “Lawless“. That was the first pilot of Lawless mind you, the one with a very, very medicated Daniel Baldwin… so very medicated was he that I have until recently remembered his outlandish behavior on set far better than the day that I almost robbed a convenience store by accident. On Friday night I attended the opening for this year’s Dixie Film Festival at Georgia State University, where I watched the husband/wife team of Michael and Janine Damian receive an award for their film Hot Tamale (click here for Official website). Regular readers (all five ka-zillion of you) will know that I’ve been busy with my own asinine projects all summer, so the Damians’ film was a welcome break that allowed me to sit back, relax, and watch someone else’s work for a change.

This weekend marks the 3rd Annual Dixie Film Festival, an event founded by Randy McDowell, an energetic young filmmaker who splits his time between Georgia and California. In its 2nd year at Georgia State University’s Cinefest Theatre, the Dixie Film Festival has plenty of room to grow but I have to say that I’m impressed by Randy’s chutzpah and the intensity that he and his staff have put into the festival this year. Last night I attended a screening of the film Hot Tamale, directed by Michael Damian of ‘The Young & The Restless’ fame, and was delighted to observe the very first presentation of The Magnolia Award to actor James Best, for 50 years in the film business (you can view the video I shot over on YouTube). Mr. Best also screened a short period piece entitled ‘Hell Bent for Good Times’ (I only spotted one anachronism).
